Frida Kahlo Motion Graphics

This video was designed as an exploratory introduction for College of DuPage’s exhibit of Frida Kahlo’s works, which were exhibited on loan from Central America in a rare moment in the United States.

Process

I began by developing a mood board and concept, then fleshed out and refined the idea by building out frames of some key moments.

What I Learned

I had designed motion works in the past, but this project helped me take a more strategic visual approach, where I took it upon myself to plan color scheme and typography beforehand, and design some key frames that would help me create more interesting transitions and have a sense of flow from one moment to the next. This really worked well for me, and I learned that doing this strategy work in the beginning really helps me be more effective in the smaller decisions around transitions, and also gives me the freedom to redesign at an early stage if something isn’t working the way I’d like it to look (this was the case with the original typography from the mood board, which changed to something more modern and masculine, which could contrast with the other design elements).
